Frequently Asked Questions

Q

What is Tallahassee Comets Girls Basketball?
A

Tallahassee Comets Girls Basketball is a 501(C)(3) Non-Profit Florida Corporation, AAU/YBOA member organization who supports and promotes competitive girls basketball.  The mission of the Tallahassee Comets is to assist student-athletes in skill development and to increase their visibility with college coaches nationwide. Skill development and exposure opportunities are provided by offering structural competitive practices and by participating in tournaments highly scouted by college coaches.

Q

Why play for the Tallahassee Comets?
A

The Tallahassee Comets Girls Basketball program provides all players the opportunity to learn the game of basketball, develop and improve their skills, and play competitive basketball against great competition.  The Tallahassee Comets prepare female student-athletes for the next level by teaching players the fundamentals of the game and provide them the opportunity to display their skills that promote and market themselves to college coaches. Every effort is made to provide each player quality attention through a principled organization.

Q Who administers Tallahassee Comets Girls Basketball?

A

Board of Directors administer the Tallahassee Comets Girls Basketball Program. The Comets Board of Directors is comprised of 3 dedicated individuals who volunteer countless hours to provide young female student-athletes with quality basketball experiences.

Q Why play competitive AAU/YBOA basketball?
A

Today, competitive AAU/YBOA basketball is essential in developing the best basketball players.  Competitive Basketball offers a high level of competition that most high school programs and many college programs simply cannot offer. It provides an avenue that college coaches can see an athlete in a highly competitive environment playing at the highest level possible for youths.  Competitive AAU/YBOA basketball is an absolute necessity for the serious student-athlete looking to improve their skills and attain a college scholarship.

Q Who determines eligibility by age or grade?
A

The Comets compete in age-correct AAU/YBOA events such as the regional qualifiers, State and National Championships.  The determining date for the age of the players is January 1, at 12:00 a.m. In essence, you can go by year of birth. For example: 1988=13u, 1989=12u, 1990=11u). A copy of the player's birth certificate and a recent photo will be needed throughout the season.

Q Who are the Comets coaches?
A

The Comets assemble excellent coaching staff for all of our teams.  The Comets coaches have a wide range of experience from middle/high school, as former college basketball players and former college coaches.  With this varied coaching and playing experience, all coaches are highly qualified to coach each team and are not paid.  Each coach volunteers their time to give back to our community.  Although we do not pay coaches for their services, we do cover their expenses associated with travel such as hotel accommodations and meals.  For bios on each coach, please review our coaches corner section.

Q When are tryouts for the teams?
A

The Tallahassee Comets encourage all girls to participate in this competitive basketball program that want to play basketball.  From past experience, the Tallahassee Comets have found that tryouts will discourage some girls from trying to participate on an AAU/YBOA team.  Instead of tryouts, the Comets host an orientation and workout session that provides information about the Tallahassee Comets program and a workout session for all players so that the coaching staff can evaluate their basketball skills.  Efforts are made so that the orientation and workout session does not conflict with players' middle and high school seasons.  The Comets have access to Tallahassee Community College and North Florida Christian School gyms and practice sessions are held at these two facilities.  Practice sessions last two hours and are held 2-3 times per week.

Q What are the players' expenses?
A

The annual full membership fee for players on AAU/YBOA teams is $1,000.00 and for the Select team which participates in college exposure events is $1,250.00.  Membership fees will defray some of the organization’s cost such as; players/coaches AAU/YBOA membership and insurance, Comets attire, corporation fees, equipment, food, uniforms, transportation, hotel accommodations, tournament entry fees and other team expenses.  The Tallahassee Comets also have an associate membership available to players who are not able to fully participate in tournament play for various reasons.  The annual associate membership fee per player is $500.00. This fee includes AAU/YBOA membership and insurance, Comets Attire and participation in local events and scheduled practices while further developing their basketball skills.  Each team is provided the opportunity to play a lot of competitive basketball!  The Comets implement a fundraising plan annually and host competitive events throughout the year to minimize the impact on precious family resources.  Families are provided fundraising opportunities year-round which offset players' expenses.

Q What is the players' commitment for each team?
A

Team commitments begin in the fall/winter season of each players' middle and high school seasons.  The Comets recruit players continuously for our competitive teams!  Each team will play between 40-60 games in a number of tournaments.  These tournaments are played in North and Central Florida, including Tallahassee and other states.  Most recently our teams played in tournaments hosted in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Virginia and Tennessee. We are able to play in several tournaments in Tallahassee in each season also.  Tournaments start in March with events hosted in Tallahassee.  AAU/YBOA competitive basketball is for skilled and motivated players who are willing to make the commitment to improve their individual, team and leadership skills.  Typically, all tournaments with the exception of Nationals, are held on weekends.  The competitive season concludes at the end of July and an annual awards banquet is held in August.

Q What are college exposure tournaments?
A

College exposure tournaments are events that are NCAA Certified that permit college coaches to attend for the purpose of evaluating and recruiting potential college players.  As stated earlier, the mission of the Tallahassee Comets is to assist student-athletes in skill development and to increase their visibility with college coaches nationwide. Skill development and exposure opportunities are provided by offering structural competitive practices and by participating in tournaments highly scouted by college coaches.  The Comets older teams will participate in several college exposure events during the competitive season.

Q What type of volunteer activities are parents required to do?
A

Volunteerism is the foundation that will help continue to build the Comets into a strong and successful girls basketball organization.  There are a number of ways to volunteer within our organization.  These include but are not limited to becoming a team manager, coach, organizing fundraisers, chaperons or volunteering to work at one of our tournaments.  Tournament volunteers include site directors, clock keepers, statisticians, admissions and concessions.
