Eileen, Melanie  and Mike Warner signing the letter of intent.

Why Hampton?  "The Hampton experience is one of the most well kept secrets in the world.  Hampton University is a first class university.  After visiting Hampton and talking to the coaches, players, and faculty members, I felt that Hampton would be the best fit for my post secondary education because not only is the school able to provide the academics necessary for my future career but additionally the atmosphere at Hampton seems to be one that would nurture and challenge me.  The Hampton experience encompasses the entire student. The mission of Hampton University is focused on and dedicated to learning and student achievement. Everything that I need (Academics and Athletics) can be gotten from Hampton University and the experience rates second to none."

Describe the moment when Coach Mebane offered you a scholarship? "When Coach Mebane offered me the scholarship, I was excited and grateful for the opportunity to play for the Hampton University Lady Pirates. When he came to my house for a home visit, he was very personable.  Not only was he interested in my goals but he shared his goals with me.  He spoke of wanting to be the first HBCU to make it into the sweet sixteen or the final four and he talked about how I could help make this goal a reality.  I could see that he is committed to his players and the total program at Hampton. When my mom and dad saw the folder with the full scholarship offer, they were excited too and they were proud that I had made this accomplishment."

Tell us about your competitive basketball experience and how it prepared you for this moment? "When I became of age to play competitive basketball, my dad was a coach for the Comets 12U team.  I would go to practice with him but I was not at all interested in playing basketball.  I would play on the sidelines with my friends.  As I watched the players practice and watched how disciplined they were I became interested. The following year, I tried out and made the team. Playing for the Comets has been a rewarding and well rounded experience for me.  The coaches not only stressed the skills but they instilled values and they placed a major emphasis on honesty and respect. I will forever be indebted to the Comets Basketball program and I owe to them a huge portion of what I have achieved."

Melanie is all smiles and competitive as a Comet and future Lady Pirate!

How does playing AAU/YBOA/Exposure basketball events prepared you for the collegiate level? "AAU/YBOA/Exposure basketball gave me the opportunity to become more focused and committed. Playing gave me tremendous exposure because college coaches and scouts were in attendance at some of the games.  Playing with these areas gave me great stamina because the coaches would always push me to my full potential and they required 100% of my effort."

Besides athletics, tell us about Melanie the person. "I am a regular teenager.  I like going to the movies, parties, and talking on the phone.  I enjoy hanging around my friends, especially the ones that are involved in athletics.  I work hard to maintain an academic focus.  I currently have 21 hours of dual enrollment classes that will apply towards my college degree. I understand that academics and athletics go hand in hand and they depend upon each other."

The Comets Sisters Celebrate With Melanie!

To your Comets Sisters, what advice do you offer? "To my Comets sisters, I would like to encourage you to remain committed and focused.  Play hard in every tournament for you never know who is watching you.  Listen to the instructions from the coaches even though they may sound unreasonable sometimes because they are only pushing you so that you can be better. I found out that they only have the players’ best interest at heart. The coaches are there to make sure that the players get every opportunity available and they only want to see the players succeed."
