Mikki Clayton Signs With Hampton University

Tallahassee Comets and North Florida Christian School’s standout Mikki "KK" Clayton has signed a letter-of-intent with Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia.  Mikki has been a five-year starting point guard for Florida High and now North Florida Christian Schools (since 8th grade) and will receive a scholarship to play for Coach Walter Mebane and the Lady Pirates of Hampton in the upcoming 2007-08 season.

KK has started taking classes at Tallahassee Community College last summer and at the end of this summer school she should have almost 28 hours finished. Signing early allowed her to have her freshman curriculum in hand so that she we can align the rest of her classes to match her curriculum from Hampton. For example, we have changed her math to Pre-Calculus and Calculus so she would have them both finished by the end of the summer for her Business Administration major.

Why Hampton?  "I chose Hampton because I have said for a while that I wanted to go to an HBCU and I am very familiar with the MEAC Conference because my dad used to the coach at FAMU. I liked Hampton because they are a good academic school as well. Coach Mebane says if you are successful in the classroom, you are successful on the court and I like that because my parents have always stressed academics as well. I also love the location of Hampton, being that it is right on the water."

As KK signs, her dad is talking with the Coach from Hampton letting him know the paperwork is done.

KK, how did your AAU experience help prepare you to achieve your goals in basketball? "Playing AAU basketball gave me the exposure that I needed and it allowed to play some of the best players from all over that not just in Tallahassee and Florida. Playing against tougher competition helped me better my game."

Do you think it will help you when you travel and compete on the collegiate level?  "I think so because the competition with AAU helped me prepare for what I will see on the collegiate level. We played a lot of Division I prospects and the experiences playing them taught me that you have to come to play every game and bring you’re a+ game every time you step on the court. Plus in our program we had itineraries to follow, study time, curfew, dress code and all the things I should see in college."

The Clayton Family:  Myah, Milan, KK, Mickey, Barbara and Deneatra.

Mom and Dad comments:  "Hampton showed the most dedicated interest in her for the longest period of time. With them having recruited her sister, Myah they ended up with an inside track with her because she knew them. She actually mentally closed down the process back in March because that was where she wanted to go. I don’t think her going to the largest school recruiting her would have been best for her – she has a chance to have a good collegiate career and will be prepared for her career pursuits academically at Hampton."
